About

Studio

Halde is a furniture workshop in Portland, Oregon, founded in 2012. We build in oak, ash, and steel, and we keep the process visible.

Inside the Halde workshop

Built by hand, on purpose

We are a small workshop, not a factory. Each piece is made by one person from start to finish, so the person who signs the work is the person who built it. That is the whole idea: when one pair of hands does everything, nothing gets passed along, and nothing gets rushed.

We work with a short list of materials we trust - oak and ash from the Pacific Northwest, steel we cut and brush ourselves. We would rather make fewer, better things than more, faster ones.

Materials

A short list, kept short

Natural oak

The workhorse. Oiled, left to mellow into a warm gold.

Smoked ash

Ammonia-smoked to a deep, even brown that needs no stain.

Brushed steel

A quiet, matte frame that lets the wood carry the warmth.

Process

How a piece gets made

  1. 01

    Talk

We start with the room and how you live in it. No drawings yet - just what the piece needs to do.

  2. 02

    Draw

We come back with a full-size drawing, a material sample, and a price. You approve it before we cut anything.

  3. 03

    Make

The piece is built at the bench by one maker, from one tree where we can. You are welcome to visit.

  4. 04

    Finish

It is delivered, oiled, and set in place. We stand behind it for as long as it lasts.

Contact

Let's talk about the piece you have in mind.

Tell us what you need and where it will live. We reply within two working days with a drawing and an honest price.
